FireChill products efficiently convert a heat source into a stream of chilled water suitable for a range of high-end residential, commercial and industrial cooling systems.

Introducing FireChill cooling technology

FireChill uses a closed loop ammonia refrigerant system to recover the energy from a high temperature source (either directly from a natural gas burner or from the waste exhaust heat from microturbines or other sources) to produce the chilled water. FireChill products are particularly relevant in areas which are hot, overpopulated have plenty of gas and/or where electricity supply is unreliable or expensive. The unique air-cooled chiller design fits well with the needs of the modern marketplace, where water-cooled absorption chillers requiring a cooling tower and careful water treatment are incompatible with typical maintenance practices.

Friends and family

A continuing development programme means the FireChill family will eventually extend to include smaller and larger systems to provide for a whole range of environments, capacities and applications. The family members include:
  • AC500 – entry level 5RT, direct-fired
  • ALT500 – captures waste heat recovery and operates in dual mode
  • MultiPack – available to both the ALT and AC range and enables scaling to 30RT
  • PowerChill – unique, integrated, all-in-one system comprising gas microturbine, chillers and heat exchanger. Containerised for ease of installation.

Commercial payback

Payback periods will depend on a number of factors – acquisition, maintenance and fuel costs and the number of annual operating hours. As a guideline, when comparing gas versus electric, a three to one ratio (electric to gas) is usually favourable for FireChill. The position improves when adding in the hidden costs of three-phase upgrade costs and/or water-cooling systems and FireChill’s much-reduced whole-life maintenance costs. The equation improves further where an ALT500 captures waste heat and the fuel is effectively “free”.

Energy options

FireChill systems require a clean high grade heat source. As long as that heat is sufficient to boil off ammonia at around 185°C (365°F) then the system is not prescriptive about the origin of that heat or the type of fuel used. Natural gas works well, as does LPG and clean bio-gas. FireChill is exploring a number of alternative fuels, in particular diesel, which requires modifications to the system set-up and additional maintenance routines.
